Because not everyone had the chance to visit the workshops, or EuroStar, it is possible to leave suggestions for new manifesto statements at the bottom of this page. Every once in a while these suggestions will be turned in to post-it notes after which the community can start voting on those statements also.
Rules for Manifesto Statements:
- should be based on a broad principle or value
- should be brief
- should be applicable to testing in the future
- represents belief rather than fact i.e. a current model
- can agree or disagree with a statement
- statements are subject to change

How can we build a message for the future? In this conversation, Dot Graham and Isabel Evans discuss their manifesto workshops planned for EuroSTAR 2008. Dot’s workshop focuses on the past; Isabel’s on a route map to the future. They are pleased to be invited to co-host the third workshop which will draft a message for the future – a manifesto for testing in the next 5 to 10 years. Bob’s previous newsletter article gives the background and more information about his plans for the manifesto at the conference.
Dot and Isabel met in June to discuss their plans for the 3 workshops. Their conversation covers why they each chose their particular perspective, what a manifesto statement is, and even a few tongue-in-cheek “anti-manifesto” statements. Testers have a history of working together for the good of testing, whatever company or country they are from; Dot and Isabel see this as an opportunity to bring together ideas from a wide variety of people to produce a concise statement about testing to take the industry forward. Find out how you can contribute to the testing manifesto of 2008.

On top of all the great presentations that will be part of EuroSTAR 2008 we would like to make a statement about the future of software testing to the test community worldwide; a Manifesto that gives declaration of principles and intentions for our journey into the future. This manifesto will be the result not just of a number of special workshops that will be held during the conference, but also through input from all the delegates and speakers who would like to contribute. This will be done via whiteboards available throughout the conference to create mind maps of testing and its future. The result of the manifesto will be presented on the last day of the conference and published on the internet. We know that others have published specific manifestos, and we will take these into account as inputs.

During the conference three special workshops will create a statement for the testing community worldwide, about the future of software testing. This will take the form of a Manifesto that gives the major guidelines for our journey into the future. The workshops will investigate what we can learn from past experiences that can benefit the future of software testing and will create route maps for the next 5 years. The manifesto workshops will be lead by two highly recognized experts in our profession, Dorothy Graham and Isabel Evans. Delegates can join them and be part of this “Future”. The Software Testing Manifesto will be explained in more detail in the next issue of the STAR Tester.
